How does business insurance work?

Insurance, in law and economics, is a form of risk managment primarily used to hedge against the risk of contingent loss in your business. Insurance is defined as the equitable transfer of the risk of a loss, from one entity to another, in exchange for a premium.  The insurance rate is a factor used to determine the amount, called the premium, to be charged for a certain amount of the insurance coverage.

What is business income insurance?

Business income insurance typically reimburses you for continuing expenses such utility bills in addition to the net income you would have earned if the loss you experienced never occurred. Some of these types of policies can cover losses as a result of the nonfunctional time  or expenses needed to get your business up and running again.

How does general liability coverage protect my business?

Adequate general liability is a necessary safeguard for the financial wellbeing of your business. It provides a level of protection if your business is engaged in a lawsuit for any number of reasons: a client could sue you for damages to their property while it is under your care; a person may find you negligent if they injure themselves while on your property; or another business could sue you for false advertising.  Essentially, general liability insurance protects you if an individual or business claims your company or employee was negligent and responsible for bodily injuries, property damage, financial loss, personal or advertising injury.  This type of insurance will pay the cost of covered damages and it can also cover attorney fees as well as the additional costs for your defense. 

How does an umbrella policy work?

An umbrella policy provides business owners extra protection beyond that which is covered by a general liability policy.  It is designed to give additional protection in situations such as multi-million dollar lawsuits.  After your general liability coverage is exhausted, an umbrella policy would kick in to cover costs.
